"Any idea when you're interviewing Haim?" an inquiry arrives. "I was hoping to ask if I can be their newest bandmate."

There's just a key snag: I also longs to be the Haims' fourth member. What's more, we are in plentiful company. A host of famous fans have also begged for the honor.

One thing is obvious something is going on. The siblings Este, Danielle and Alana launched their path performing shows at small eateries with their family. Today, they are multi-time Grammy nominees.

Like all the best ensembles, they're a tight-knit gang. Their videos repeatedly depict them walking in sync down the streets of Los Angeles. On stage, they jam with such boundless joy you find yourself thinking, "I'd love to be involved in that, too."

"How often on tour that fans came up to us and said, 'Watching you live, I picked up a drum kit'," remarks Alana, the most junior of the Haim siblings. "That is the biggest honour. That's an award in itself. We have succeeded if we can encourage others to start a band."

"So anyone gets an invitation to be the next member of Haim."

Historic Nod

The trio are speaking from home, where they're recovering after an lengthy tour in for their fourth album, I Quit.

They're right now reeling from the news it's been shortlisted for best rock album at the Grammys – with Haim the pioneering all-woman band ever in the running for the award.

"I tune into the lists every year, so it kind of feels like an out-of-body experience when your name is read out," says Alana. "I had to call my sisters to say, 'Did we just hear this right or am I imagining things'?"

The significance of the honor isn't lost on the trio.

"We really set out to make a rock album this time, so it's a huge achievement," continues Alana. "Yet we're just grateful for the pioneers that inspired us."

Heartbreak and Laughter

The album came out of a time of emotional upheaval. All three sisters were single, and the music captures that odd liminal space where you're relieved to be free, but not quite ready to let go.

The words detail breakups and farewells. The sisters want love, but not the specific love they've got. You can hear them determining in real time who they aspire to be.

"I love way of putting it, yes," responds Danielle. "I Quit is like a personal statement. You have to make an effort in ignoring the outside opinions and saying, 'I couldn't care less what people think'."

Evolution of Sound

That recent toughness called for a new sound – more organic and immediate than any of the music the band had done before.

For Danielle, who helped produce the album, that began with the drums.

"Percussion is such a specific thing, and I care so much about it," she emphasizes.

"'Journey of the drum sound' will be the title of our book," laughs Alana. "I always say, our albums won't commence until we find the ideal drum sound."

Anecdotes and Collective Laughter

The band's candor fueled the album's promotional campaign, where the sisters shared some of their romantic tales.

One man ended things with Este over a health consideration. Alana shared a story of flying to spend New Year's Eve with someone, only to receive a friendly slap at midnight.

"Experiencing these heartbreaks, you just feel like there's no hope," notes Alana. "Therefore to be able to laugh at those stories and hear others tell you even crazier stories, it's incredible."

A Secure Path

One can easily sense a change in the band. Today, Haim are more certain of their standing in the industry.

They're top-billed acts, with chart-topping albums and an international audience.

Yet the sister act will forever be their primary focus.

"My sisters and I have been playing music since I was a young child," shares Alana. "There is no other path that we were meant to do. And I'm really thankful we've reached this point and we're still making music."
