A trader earned a substantial sum on the ouster of the Venezuelan leader just before it was made public, leading to inquiries about potential gains made from inside knowledge of the event.

Market Movement in Wagers

Predictions made on the forecasting site, an online prediction market, that the Venezuelan president would be removed from office by the close of the month increased in the hours before former President Trump stated on Saturday that the Venezuelan leader had been taken into custody.

A particular user, which became a member recently and made four bets, all on political events in Venezuela, profited a total of $436,000 from a initial bet of $32,537.

The identity is unknown. This unidentified trader had only a cryptographic address for identification.

Odds Fluctuate Before Announcement

Market statistics shows that participants estimated the likelihood of the president's removal at just a low 6.5 percent in the afternoon of the Friday before the event.

Yet the market's assessment had climbed to over 10% by the end of the day and spiked dramatically in the first hours of the next day, suggesting a rapid movement in positions just before the public announcement was made.

"This specific wager has all the characteristics of a bet based on inside information," said an industry expert.

A handful of other traders also profited significant sums from similar wagers.

Political Attention Emerges

Some lawmakers are starting to take note.

Proposed legislation introduced on the start of the week seeks to ban federal workers from participating on prediction markets if they have "material nonpublic information" related to a market.

The Prediction Market Landscape

Forecasting platforms have grown significantly in the United States, with users able to bet on everything from sports to politics.

The industry faced scrutiny under the previous administration. But it has received a warmer welcome during the current presidency.

Trading on insider information is illegal in the traditional financial markets, but there are fewer regulations in the prediction market industry.

A spokesperson for Kalshi said their site "explicitly prohibits insider trading of any form."
